As viewers sat through a 65-7 drubbing by the Georgia Bulldogs against the TCU Horned Frogs in the College Football Playoff National Championship, there were probably many who were holding out for the second trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Or at least as many as can be when it was the least-viewed championship in the Bowl Champions Series/CFP era. But it came in the fourth quarter, and it was quite brutal.

This trailer introduces the true emotional stakes of the film. The time Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) missed in the Quantum Realm, especially during his daughter Cassie's (now played by Kathryn Newton) childhood, it’s lingered in his mind especially as more years go on since his return. Lest the broader context is forgotten: he missed portions due to jail time both before and since becoming Ant-Man. He wants that second chance and Kang (Jonathan Majors) is ready to exploit it. He tells Scott he’s the one man who can give him time. Hope (Michelle Pfeiffer) warns Scott of Kang’s capabilities and that he cannot be trusted.

RELATED:

There’s a shot of two Scotts facing one another. Scott, Cassie, Kang, two mooks (other Kangs?), and an unmasked MODOK, who may very well be the new form of Darren Cross as he’s played by Corey Stoll, walk out somewhere. But then, it seems that as part of the deal, Kang has Scott doing his dirty work, blackmailing him, and threatening to end his life as he knows it. And of course, he has that power. There’s an assault on the family and the quantum populace. At some point, Scott lets Cassie know his feelings because she starts blaming herself for what’s happened.

However, Kang does recommend sparing her… from watching the beatdown he’s about to give her dad, as they go hand-to-hand in combat with punching, stomping, and headlocks between the two of them, though Kang does use some minor energy powers. We also see Scott getting buried under what seems to be other Ant-Man suits, and MODOK masked too. Scott knows two things: The deal’s been broken, and they both have to lose.

Do note that as a designated “new trailer”, the fact that it’s not designated as the final means there is probably one more in the next five weeks before the “Avengers-level” movie’s February 17 release. The Super Bowl is only the Sunday before the 12th, but few have revealed their advertising plans there.
