Amazon Prime’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power led the charts for the top-watched series in September during its initial release and in October for its season finale. Though the series started strong with 1.2 billion minutes streamed, there was a considerable dip in minutes streamed as the season progressed to its midpoint. Streaming then picked up again to end its finale with 1.1 billion minutes streamed. According to Parrot Analytics, which determines consumer demand in entertainment media based on social media engagement and downloads (including pirated versions), the series averaged 30.5 times more demand than an average television show in the United States, earning an “outstanding” rating with its level of demand peaking in the top 2.7% of all U. S. television shows. Despite a downward trend of demand, which is natural for television series toward the end of a season, Parrots Analytics put The Rings of Power in the 99.4th percentile in the drama category. It is worth noting that another hot show Star Wars: Andor is in the 99.2nd percentile in the action and adventure category.

Despite its seeming popularity, the series may have fallen prey to the controversial “review bombing.” Even though Amazon’s review ratings for the show were originally supposed to be down for only 72 hours, it ended up being down for a total of 8 days upon release. Hollywood Reporters’ James Hibberd further elaborated on the issue:

“Some [reviews] vanished so fast, it’s like they were wearing the One Ring. Many point out HBO’s House of the Dragon faced similar trolling for its diversity moves, yet its audience scores weren’t impacted.”

With almost thirty and a half thousand reviews on Amazon, the site displays a rating of 3.4 out of 5. Half of the reviews boast 5 stars, and a solid 27% of reviews claim 1 star. Most of the reviews conclude that the series has its lore challenges, but the series lays out a great storyline for events to grow. Additionally, Rotten Tomatoes gives a Tomatometer of 52% and an audience score of 38%, which is inconclusive Furthermore, out of 471 critic ratings, 399 critics found the show to be “fresh” or in a positive light.

Filming for the second season has thankfully already begun just a week before its finale was released, and Amazon Studios’ Head of Global TV, Vander Sanders, was excited to gush about the show’s first successful season and additional updates about Season 2. With many questions remaining at the end of Season 1, people are ravenous for explanations, only to be teased by Amazon hinting at when Season 2 will actually be released
