Season two of House of the Dragon is only four months away. Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming and gaming chief J.B. Perrette announced that the Game of Thrones prequel will be airing on HBO in June. Perrette did not nail down an exact date when he spoke at Morgan Stanley’s Technology, Media and Telecom conference, but did give a window of when fans would see the dragons return.

The series was one of the few major shows not delayed by the SAG-AFTRA/WGA strike because its script was finished and the production comprised of mainly non-American actors. With that said, it’s still been an agonizing two years between seasons. Emma D'Arcy, Olivia Cooke and Matt Smith are returning as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Alicent Hightower, and Daemon Targaryen. There’s a host of new castings as well: Tom Taylor as Lord Cregan Stark, Clinton Liberty as Addam of Hull, Jamie Kenna as Ser Alfred Broome, Kieran Bew as Hugh, Tom Bennett as Ulf, and Vincent Regan as Ser Rickard Thorne.

House of the Dragon wrapped filming in Europe and the UK in September 2023, so HBO have just been waiting on showrunner Ryan Condal to finish post-production. Ryan Condal is now helming House of the Dragon solo after co-producer Miguel Sapochnik stepped back at the end of the first season, though Sapochnik is still listed as an executive producer. It will be interesting to see the impact of these changes on the finished product.

The second season of House of the Dragon is rumored to be centerd around a conflict between the Targaryens and the Hightowers, but with G.R.R Martin heavily influencing the series from behind the scenes, expect alliances to change and form at the drop of a hat.

House of The Dragon is one of seven reported Game of Thrones spinoff series in development and/or production, including a Jon Snow-based show. Let’s hope the rest don’t take as long to arrive.
