Game of Thrones is coming to the big screen in the future, though it will be a long wait.
The franchise’s first foray into theatres with a major motion picture will be Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest, a story purportedly set to follow the conquests of the titular Aegon I, the founder of Targaryen control over Westeros. Warner Bros. has dated the film to June 1, 2029, and aside from some of the creatives assembled to create the film (Owen Harris as director, Beau Willimon as writer), no casting or other production hires are currently announced.
Aegon’s Conquest is an interesting story to tackle for a film due to the current timeline we have for the Conquest itself. It was a blistering military campaign that saw only a few major battles, but what battles did occur were often spectacular arenas of slaughter at the hands of the Targaryen dragons. The Vale and the North submitted without conflict, though the Stormlands, Riverlands, Westerlands, and the Reach were all conquered by force. It was only Dorne that resisted Aegon’s invasion, ultimately killing one of his sisters and her dragon in a later conflict. But just where and when will the film end? On a moment of genuine triumph for Aegon, or a darker scene?
The tone the film intends to strike will likely determine how it ends, and which factions it focuses on most. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for further announcements on who will play Aegon and his two sister-wives, critical casting choices that will hopefully help the film succeed.
