'Daredevil: Born Again' Season 2 Episode 5 Review

So far, the second season of Daredevil: Born Again has been doing quite well. With stellar build-up across the season until this point, the cliffhanger at the end of Episode 4 leads well into a nostalgia-packed Episode 5 titled “The Grand Design”. Picking up shortly after Episode 4, we see the tense, sumptuous story set up across the season opener reach a crescendo here as three storylines play out for our enjoyment. However, this particular episode is something worth experiencing, so we will avoid spoilers for Episode 5 of Season 2.
As a result of us avoiding spoilers for the show, we’ll have to talk around a lot of critical plot elements in “The Grand Design”, but we’ll state that the cinematography and lighting teams are on point for some specific reasons. The same is true of the set designers, working overtime to create excellent visuals closely connected to the shooting and lighting efforts.

Other than that, the acting is of course, phenomenal this episode. Multiple roles get to shine, from Arty Froushan’s Buck Cashman, to Michael Gandolfini as Daniel Blake, and most certainly, Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk. Their portrayals in each of their storylines is interesting for how it fleshes out the characters, yet also shows them approach their limits, testing them even as it reveals more about each and every one of them.
The same is true of Matt Murdock in Episode 5, as he is pushed to the brink in a situation that seriously tests his own boundaries, much as has appeared in Season 1, and as we saw happen to him in the various Netflix series he appeared in years prior. The merry-go-round of Matt being pushed to the brink certainly has a different tone this time around, as the importance of faith plays a key role in the stories told in this episode.
The only critique we can offer, which would not spoil a main element of the plot, is that one thread from the last episode has not yet been resolved, and went unaddressed for this entire episode. While we can respect the need of the show to keep us on the edge of our seats, we sincerely hope that next episode will finally see something nailed down as concrete, and we can avoid a zig or a zag in what should hopefully be a straight line.
We’ll be back next week, on the edge of those seats, dreading to see what happens next as the build-up throughout this show is surely now approaching critical mass. It will be a wild Episode 6 next week, on Tuesday, April 21st!
