House of the Dragon season three wrapped up production this past month, and rumors are speculating that the release will be sometime next summer. Tensions are high in the world of Westeros, and for those who are not steeped in GRRM lore about the Dance of Dragons, this piece will help with some things about what to expect this season.

One of the first things to expect is the famed Battle of the Gullet. In season two, Tyland Lannister went to the Triarchy to barter for their aid in breaking Corlys Velaryon’s blockade in the Gullet. With that aid secured, through some land grants, the showdown between the Triarchy’s navy and Velaryon’s fleet is set to occur, along with the new dragon riders that Rhaenyra recruited and elevated.

Battles are expensive to design, produce, film, and edit. The show has sidestepped this by discussing some aspects and showcasing others. The Green Army and the Black Army seem to be focused on the Riverlands, and that may or may not be something we see. More likely, we’ll see the fall of Harrenhal to Aemond, which will allow Daemon and Rhaenyra to sack and take King’s Landing in a little bit of a switcheroo. Since Harrenhal falls to Aemond, we’ll likely see the death of Lord Strong. Aemond, who we’ve already seen, isn’t too emotionally stable, doesn’t take the loss of King’s Landing lightly, and, of course, people suffer as a result.

In the book, Fire & Blood, Rhaenyra’s newfound success is short-lived, as her dragonseeds turn on her. Ulf, one of the new dragon riders she elevated, is bold enough to be a noble, but without the birth. Elevated to dragon rider status brings with it a new foundation with which to make demands of the Queen, which she surely can’t meet, thus leading to him and some of the others turning on her forces.

Other things we can possibly expect during this penultimate season (there’s only four planned) are the fatal confrontation between Daemon and Aemond. According to lore, the two duke it out in the sky, which leads to the death of both. Their demise has already been prophesied, with Aemond said to be swallowed by the Gods Eye (which turns out to be a lake near Harrenhal) and Alys told Daemon that he would die at Harrenhal. Prophecy is a big thing in Westeros, so we’ll likely see this happen as well.

Furthermore, more dragons are likely to perish, likely through the riot in the dragon pit by the people of King’s Landing, tired of starving and being treated as fodder. They storm the dragon pit and slay some of the remaining dragons there. This one’s been building for some time now, as we’ve seen that the people of King’s Landing are made to suffer for the decisions of those who find their pride hurt. They’ll be led by an amputee-prophet called the Shepherd.

Rhaenyra’s not going to have a great season, it seems, because she’ll also, according to the book, lose another son when Joffrey attempts to stop a riot in the dragon pit with his mother’s dragon. As we’ve seen, dragons don’t just let anyone ride them, and despite Joffrey being Rhaenyra’s son, he bucks him off, and the boy falls to his death.

Finally, Prince Aegon was smuggled out of King’s Landing, only to be taken to Dragonstone. His coup there is likely to set up a tense confrontation between him and his half-sister.

Ultimately, we know this whole series is considered a “tragedy” in the sense that the Targaryen family essentially destroys itself and brings the dragons basically to extinction (we know that’s technically not true, but they don’t). That’s something the show makes abundantly clear and delivers well on.
