Jon Favreau has proven that he and The Mandalorian team have dedicated themselves to creating menacing monsters, alluring aliens, and enthralling enemies to expand the Star Wars universe. Each season has introduced more as it has built on the last. The pace continues with Season 3 of The Mandalorian as we quickly meet a giant monster and eventually a Pirate King that would make even Hondo's scales stand on end.

A great addition to the chaos of the season premiere, Gorian Shard poses a new threat to Din and Grogu. Now that the two are free from the relentless pursuit of Moff Gideon and the remnants of the Empire, what could be better than a vengeful Pirate King to bring some intense moments and high-speed chases? Gorian Shard fits that role perfectly, as pirates are nothing new to the Star Wars universe.

Brought to live-action by actor Nonso Anozie, Gorian Shard is a Pirate King who roams the less-patroled areas of the Galaxy. After the fall of the Empire, while the New Republic began to retake its foothold as the governing force, pirates had free reign in many parts of the Galaxy. With a lack of resources, Gorian Shard could pillage as he pleased.

The placement of Nevarro in the Outer Rim makes it a perfect world for pirates, gangsters, and anyone on the run. As shown in season 1, Nevarro was almost as bad as Mos Eisley. Greef Karga has done a fantastic job renovating the city, but it still can't break free from its past.

Gorian Shard had a connection with the cantina now-turned school on Nevarro. Built with a cut of Shard's treasure, the ex-cantina used to be the drinking spot of choice for pirates across the Galaxy. The drastic switch from a drinking hole to an education center showed Vane and his men how drastically the planet has changed.

After a brief shoot-out with the intrusive pirates, Vane was sent back to Shard with a message he wouldn't like. Later in the episode, during an intense dog fight, Vane led Din to Shard's ship, where we finally saw the Pirate King and his rage. An aquatic-looking alien, Shard, looked like the embodiment of a nightmarish pirate. With similar qualities to Davey Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean and something that would crawl out of The Black Lagoon, Gorian Shard has certainly piqued the interest of fans.

Shard's origin and race remain a mystery for now. Fans can expect it to be revealed soon, as that has been the case with the newer creatures and monsters introduced in The Mandalorian. The swampish, seaweed-covered alien looks like he originates from a planet like Mon Cala or the swamps of Nal Hutta. As Din escaped the clutches of this unforgiving Pirate King, we can look forward to more conflict between him and his goons.
