I FINALLY Watched ‘Terrifier’

Terrifier

One of the most controversial horror franchises in recent years is Terrifier. The first film came out in 2016 and was immediately met with a mix of love from hardcore horror fans and disgust from almost everyone else. When the sequel, Terrifier 2, was released in 2022, it took HorrorTok by storm. Almost everyone was talking about how amazing it was while others were claiming that people were passing out, throwing up, and having to leave the theater. As a huge horror fan who loves gory movies such as the Saw franchise, I knew that for this series I wanted to check out the first film, and honestly, I wish I hadn’t.

I went into Terrifier with pretty high expectations because of how many amazing reviews I had seen from the people I follow on HorrorTok. These are people that I typically share similar views on movies with, so I was expecting something gory but overall enjoyable. That was not at all what I got and in full transparency, I did not finish the film. I watched a little over half and was so bored that I had to turn it off.

Terrifier is a slasher film that follows a villain only known as Art the Clown. He dons sloppy black-and-white clown makeup and a matching outfit. The film begins with a news broadcast about a horrifying Halloween massacre; we are then taken back in time to the night in question. On that fateful Halloween night, Art runs into two drunk friends, and he quickly becomes obsessed with one of the friends, Tara. After the girls realize they are too drunk to drive, they visit a local pizza restaurant to sober up and once again come into contact with Art the Clown. He refuses to speak to one of the friends while staring menacingly at Tara. Once the girls leave the pizza place, all hell breaks loose and anyone that gets in Art’s way is going to be murdered.

There is genuinely nothing positive that I can say about the film. It moves at a very strange pace and feels like it is a student film that you would review in a college class. The characters are horribly unlikable and incredibly stupid. They make every bad decision you could possibly make, so you aren’t even disappointed to see them die. The effects in the film are also terrible, and it left me wondering why so many people had a problem with the gore because it was similar to what you see on a regular Halloween night. Art is one the worst horror villains I have ever watched because he isn’t scary or likable, so you spend each of his scenes begging for it to end. The acting was terrible, the horror easter eggs felt more like they were copying the films than hinting at them, and the story was completely nonexistent. I am honestly surprised that this franchise has a new film coming out later this year.

Rating: 0/10

Terrifier is available to stream on Peacock.
