'Mortal Kombat II' Review

Maybe I’m a bit biased because I got to see the panel for this movie at New York Comic Con last year, which included some clips, but Mortal Kombat II was a fun action movie. Don’t get me wrong, there was a lot wrong with it, but the combat and action scenes were the highlight of the movie. Oh, and Karl Urban as Johnny Cage was also pretty cool.

A Mortal Kombat tournament is called when Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford) threatens the Earth realm, the last one he needs to complete his takeover of all the realms. Five champions represent Earth, with washed-up actor Johnny Cage joining them. He is very reluctant about this whole thing, but when he realizes he doesn’t have a choice, he gives it his all. The final two fights, which take place simultaneously, are the coolest inx the whole movie and are very well done. I don’t want to spoil anything, but Johnny Cage comes through in the end.

The two standouts for me in this movie were Johnny Cage and Kitana. Johnny Cage is such a jerk and a washed-up actor who’s miserable in his life. Once he realizes he doesn’t have a choice in the matter, he starts to see it from a different perspective. He becomes a much better guy and an even better fighter. Karl Urban does such a great job with Cage, and just a phenomenal actor when it comes to characters like this. Kitana is just plain cool. She has bladed fans, and you can’t get much cooler than that. Adeline Rudolph did a great job with the character.

The fight scenes were so cool, but very violent, which is to be expected. Each character has their own fighting style, and it was great to see them all work together at points. It was fluid and always exciting. One of the coolest fights for me was when Liu Kang was fighting Kung Lao in the arena. The background behind them would change from blue to red at different times, and it was such a cool addition to the fight. Another favorite scene of mine occurred during the final fight, with Kitana and her fans. I can’t say much because I’d be spoiling it, but it deals with her fans, and it’s just so cool.

While the fighting and action scenes were great, the CGI was not. You don’t watch a movie like this for the CGI, but it can take you out of it a bit when it doesn’t look good, and this was the case with some scenes, especially when it came to the lightning. The script and the dialogue were not the best either, but the humor throughout was pretty good.

Mortal Kombat II isn’t anything to write home about, but it’s a fun action movie, and that’s sometimes all you need. It has many references to the games, even the classic line of “get over here”. The ending also sets up perfectly for a third movie. If you need two hours of just mindless entertainment, then, as always, make sure you pop over to your local movie theater to watch it!

Rating: 6.5/10
