‘Sinners’ Spoiler-Free Review

Ryan Coogler’s new film, Sinners, has hit theaters, and it is the best film I have ever seen. This film is being marketed as a horror film, but that label honestly feels like an insult. I love horror, but this film is so much more than just a horror film. It is a beautiful work of art that explores the realities of being a person of color in America while also exploring the effects of past traumas, romance, and vampires.
The film follows two brothers, Smoke and Stack, who are twins, and their young cousin, Sammie, as they work to set up Club Juke. The trio hopes that this club can be a safe space for the people in their community. Both twins are played by Michael B. Jordan, who gives the performance of his career, and their cousin is played by Miles Caton in his first role ever. The film takes place in Mississippi during 1932, which is when white men still had slaves even though it was technically illegal, and people of color were commonly killed for no reason. This is explored heavily in the film as the twins tell their cousin the truths about America for black men and dispel the lies and rumors that he has been hearing. The trio is successful in setting up the club, but unfortunately, fate has other plans. Soon after a musical performance by Sammie, three strangers appear, and everything goes downhill. The ending of this film had my husband and me in tears because of how beautiful it is, and the twists were incredible.

The acting in this film was also incredible. Michael B. Jordan outdid himself in this role, not only changing the cadence of his voice but also having different micro-mannerisms for each twin. Newcomer Miles Caton held his own when sharing the screen with Michael B. Jordan, and his talent is on par with every other actor in this film. He also has an incredible voice that he gets to showcase at different points in the film. Ryan Coogler did a phenomenal job in both the writing and directing of this film. One of my favorite things about this film was the fact that every single character, prop, and event mentioned plays a pivotal role in some aspect of the plot.
Another thing that I have to mention is the effects, which are incredible – the wounds look real, the blood actually looks like it would in real life, and it is clear when they are using practical effects. While all of the things I have mentioned are top-notch, none of them hold a candle to how incredible the music is in this film. When the vampires are singing and dancing, it is a little bit funny, but also makes complete sense for the vampires. The music that is used in the club and other parts of the film is transcendent.
This film additionally explores the power of music and how it can bring people together in the most horrific of times. There is a music scene in the middle of the film that blends together not only the talent of the actors but also the directing, writing, effects, and sound mixing. The scene is the perfect showcase of what the cast and crew of this film are capable of, and watching that scene felt like an honor. This film explores the different types of music that were created by black musicians, which isn’t something that many films do. Unfortunately, it is more common for these genres of music to be attributed to white musicians and for the true history to be swept under the rug. This film will forever be my favorite, and I believe it will be recognized as the greatest masterpiece in modern cinema.
A quick note: make sure that you stay through the first part of the credits. The credits begin to appear over the top of scenes from the film, but when they are done, it leads into the final twist of the film, and I promise you do not want to miss it.
Sinners officially hits theaters April 18.
