'Thunderbolts*' Spoiler-Free Review

Thunderbolts is a wonderful new installment in the MCU. The movie has a lot of heart and plenty of comedic moments, but it also tackles the topic of mental health. It does a great job of portraying depression and how alone it can make you feel. These were the perfect characters to tackle this topic because they have all been through it at some point.
The Thunderbolts are brought together, thanks to Valentina Allegra de Fontaine. They are each sent to kill each other, but when they realize her plan to get rid of them, they decide to work together. They also meet Bob, who is more than he seems. The group gets help from Bucky, and they try to take down Valentina, but she has a secret weapon. Bucky is also a congressman, but I doubt that will last too long after this. Remember Bob? Yeah, well, she was running some experiments on him, which made him superpowerful. This introduces Sentry to the MCU, and Valentina tries to have him kill the Thunderbolts. He’s conflicted, but eventually his darkness takes over. The group springs into action to help their friend and to try and take down Valentina once and for all.

The major theme of this movie is mental health. It’s something almost everyone struggles with at some point in their life, and it was great to see it play such an important role in this movie. Each character has had something terrible happen in their life, but they have overcome it one way or another. Their pasts bring them closer together as a group. Yelena is able to get through to Bob when he is at his lowest, and she reminds him that he is not alone. The group also comes together in the end to show Bob that they all care for him when he needs to conquer his inner demon once and for all. The movie makes a point to show that you shouldn’t hide what you’re feeling, otherwise it can take over.
When this movie was first announced, I was just really excited to see my favorite MCU character, Bucky Barnes, back on the big screen. The movie left me still loving Bucky, but a newfound love for the other characters in this movie, even John Walker. Walker was a character I didn’t like, but after learning more about him and his past, I even started to like him. Alexei and Yelena had some great emotional moments together, and brought them closer together as a family. Ghost was a great addition, and I hope we get to see her more in the future. The addition of Bob/Sentry was incredible. It was great to see these characters, who were brought together by a common enemy, become a family in the end.

The combat was fluid, exciting, and it was perfectly spaced out. It never felt like there was too much or too little action. The score was incredible and really added to those emotional moments. It was gritty, dark, but never lost sight of the story. The post-credits scene sets up for the next MCU installment, The Fantastic Four. Whatever your thoughts may be about the MCU currently, I recommend taking a trip to your nearest movie theater to watch this movie, because you won’t be disappointed.
