Amber Heard Settled Her Defamation Case Against Johnny Depp After Filing An Appeal Earlier This Month

Amber Heard will pay $1 million in settlement to Johnny Depp, though she says the decision was “not an act of concession.”
A 2018 op-ed that Heard had written for The Washington Post newspaper described herself as a “public figure representing domestic abuse,” which Depp sued her over in realising the article was talking about him after their divorce in 2017. Heard filed a countersuit, bringing the courts into play. After battles in a Virginia court in the spring of 2022, the former couple both presented stories of their relationship. Both sides were full of violence and misconduct, with Heard going one further in saying that Depp had subjected her to emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, which Depp vigorously denied.

The jury deliberated and found in favour of Depp, bar one count, surprising some legal experts owing to the opposite result happening in a UK court two years ago (although that case was Depp v The Sun, rather than Depp v Heard, and there was no jury involved). Awarded $15 million in damages, lawyers representing Depp say they were happy to “formally close the door on this painful chapter for Mr. Depp,” with it said that the $1 million settlement would be donated to several charities by the actor.
The settlement, which comes after Heard had filed an appeal earlier in the month, says that she had “lost faith in the American legal system.” That she “simply cannot go through” another trial. Across the six weeks of this trial, which had been live-streamed for all to see, there was nothing hidden as the case proceeded, with users of social media, especially legal professionals, breaking down every bit of it. With the case now closed, the two actors can move on from something they thought had been put behind them five years ago.
