Anthony Mackie is returning to his stage roots with his next role. According to Deadline, the actor is taking to the stage as the antagonist Macbeth, an army general and eventual Thane of Cawdor, in the Broadway production of Shakespeare's Macbeth. The character becomes king of Scotland, and his tyranny only worsens, but he struggles with the weight of his actions.

Rehearsals are set to start in February 2027, with opening previews beginning around the end of March or beginning of April; the play itself is expected to run until the end of July, but its home theater has not been named. Mackie commented on the future and the magnitude of this role for him.

The actor began, “I started as a theater kid. And doing theater was my passion since I was seven years old. And you know, now being able to do it at this level in this space, not too many people can say they did Macbeth on Broadway." Not only has he been in theater for years, but Mackie also graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in drama from the Juilliard School in 2001. This return to the stage won't derail his current on-screen acting, he added, “So once I finish on Broadway, I’ll go to finish up all the Avengers stuff for Secret Wars."

Mackie reflected on the character, "Macbeth becomes so paranoid he’s ’s willing to do anything to remain in power." He continued, "That’s why I was so excited. I mean, you know, Macbeth is one of the great plays in the canon… It’s one of those roles that everybody dreams of playing. And coming from where I came from and being able to do it on Broadway is kind of a monumental feat, not only in my career, but in my life.”

The actor touched on the struggle of balancing theater work when not living in the hub, "The thing about theater is if you live in New York, it’s great because it puts you at home. But if you don’t live in New York, you know, having kids, it’s a huge sacrifice to be able to take time from your kids and daddy duty to go and dip your foot back in the water to chase your dreams. But this was something I think my kids will understand." Mackie concluded, "I’m just honored and jumping in wholeheartedly."
