We’ve had samurai Batman, Victorian Batman, and the infamous suit with nipples. But in the new trailer for Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires, dropped at San Diego Comic-Con, it appears that DC hasn’t just redesigned the suit, they’ve reimagined the entire backstory.

The new Batman is Yohualli Coatl, a privileged member of an Aztec tribe is pitted against the Spanish conquistador, Hernán Cortés. Aligning with the OG origin story, a villain is still responsible for the death of Batman’s parents, and it appears fans will see variations of the Joker and Harvey Dent. But there’s no Gotham City. The urban jungle has been traded for an actual one.

Horacio García Rojas will be providing the voice of Batman (Narcos: Mexico), with Omar Chaparro (Yoka) and Álvaro Morte (Cortes) also starring. However, if the trailer is any indication, fans of this series will want to tune in for the stunning batsuit, which is nothing like anything seen in the franchise so far.

Mexican animation studio Ánima (best known for Top Cat: The Movie and Netflix’s Legend Quest) have partnered with Warner Bros Animation to bring the latest cape crusader to life. Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires is due to air on HBO MAX and in Mexican theaters on September 18th, 2025.
