The Elder Scrolls is one of the most beloved game franchises in existence. Modders constantly try to reinvigorate older games like Morrowind and bring them into the “modern” engines used to make Skyrim. Fans eagerly await more information on Elder Scrolls VI, which was announced in 2018 at E3, but there has been no update on the project.

Aside from the deluge of Skyrim new editions they release, there’s now another game that can tide fans over in the long wait for the sixth game. Amid swirling rumors, it seems Bethesda had been hard at work, with the help of remake studio Virtuos, remaking fan favorite, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

In a not-so-secret announcement (a series of screenshots had leaked last week), Bethesda revealed that the game is indeed real, and dropped today on Xbox, PC, and PS5.

And it looks incredible.

The game was remade with graphical updates using Unreal Engine 5, and is the most stunning Elder Scrolls game we’ve seen. It runs at 4K with 60 frames per second. It’s not just a graphical remaster, though. They’ve changed the game’s mechanics as well, updating the block feature, as well as including a sprint button, dodge, and a revamped leveling system that is a cross between Oblivion and Skyrim. The modern technology used to remake the game has also utilized a lip-sync feature, especially with new dialogue, and they’ve improved the in-game menus as well as improved the third-person viewpoint that often comes with these games, but can look clunky.

It’s available now on the major platforms for a base game price of $49.99, but is also available for free on Game Pass. There is a deluxe edition as well, and it includes a nice throwback to a famous gaffe from Bethesda when they charged people for useless horse armor.
