The Academy Awards, also called The Oscars, are a prestigious event, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has recently announced updated rules for the upcoming 2026 edition. Voters are now required to watch every movie in their categories before they can vote, verification and enforcement of this has not been specified. A new Achievement in Casting award, “recognizing the creative collaboration between casting directors, filmmakers, and producers in assembling a film’s acting ensemble,” has also been announced. The academy has also issued rules about Generative AI, stating, “With regard to Generative Artificial Intelligence and other digital tools used in the making of the film, the tools neither help nor harm the chances of achieving a nomination.

The Academy and each branch will judge the achievement, taking into account the degree to which a human was at the heart of the creative authorship when choosing which movie to award.” Further details can be checked at the source.

The Oscars are a prestigious event with a long history. As we approach the centennial of these awards, we must remember that it is not stagnant, constantly changing to suit the tides of film history. Will these new rules be an improvement? Only time will tell.
