'Star Wars: Starfighter' And The 'Star Wars' 50th Anniversary Event Get IMAX 77mm Release

The original Star Wars film was shot on 35mm film. However, even at its 1977 release, George Lucas began producing 70mm prints from the original negatives through a process known as “blow-ups.” This did not increase the resolution, but it did result in brighter images on larger screens and superior 6-track magnetic audio.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the film that launched the entire franchise, Star Wars (without the “A New Hope” subtitle and with Han shooting first—in other words, the original version, not the 1997 Special Editions) will return to cinemas on February 19, 2027, for a limited time. For the first time, it will be presented in IMAX, both digitally and as 70mm film at select IMAX locations.
Roughly three months later, on May 28, the weekend the first Star Wars film premiered five decades ago, Star Wars: Starfighter will hit the (very) big screens. Shot on IMAX-certified film cameras and optimized for an IMAX release, Starfighter will also be presented in digital format and as converted 70mm film in cinemas that are capable of showing such films.
Under the direction of Shawn Levy, Ryan Gosling will star as Kade Auberon, a rogue who is forced to catch up with his mysterious past. Alongside Gosling, the cast of Starfighter includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, Flynn Gray, and Amy Adams in yet-unannounced roles.

70mm film is nearly as old as cinema itself. Still, the extremely big, heavy, and expensive cameras have long been a hurdle to making it a mainstream format, along with relatively few venues that were (and are) technically capable of presenting such films. Nevertheless, more and more blockbuster movies incorporate at least a few (action) scenes shot on 70mm (especially for IMAX presentations), with the most recent being Christoper Nolan’s The Odyssey, which has become the highest-grossing IMAX film of all time, at least partly due to its 70mm presentations.
