A recent comment by Randy Pitchford, the CEO of Gearbox Games, has been discussed at length by the gaming press.
In response to a user’s post on X directed at Randy demanding that the price of the upcoming Borderlands 4 not be $80, Pitchford replied with two statements. The first was a factual one, a short reply of “Not my call.”
The second statement, though, has triggered the most discussion. Pitchford performed the age-old “back in my day” by discussing how he apparently used his minimum wage job as an ice cream shop employee in 1991 to save up and buy the game Starflight for 80$, for the SEGA Genesis. However, he framed this point by starting with the statement “If you’re a real fan, you’ll find a way to make it happen.”

As analysis by Kotaku and many others in the wake of this comment highlighted, that mindset is not at all reasonable with the realities of modern America for many millions across the USA. It also comes across as fairly out of touch for a super-wealthy individual, who sold his company for 1.3 billion dollars, to make a statement of this nature.
We’ll have to wait and see if statements like this from Pitchford, who is not exactly the most beloved by fans and the gaming media, will do any damage to the sales and reception of Borderlands 4 later this year.
