James Gunn, the new head of the DC Studio, is continuing the reboot and remaking of the DC Universe with a second season of the HBO Max Series, Peacemaker, starring wrestler and actor John Cena as the titular character, a role he first assumed for James Gunn’s debut DC project, Suicide Squad (2021). Despite how his character was left near-death by the end of Suicide Squad, the film was followed by an eight-part Peacemaker series on HBO Max in 2022.
The first season of the series featured Peacemaker (aka Chris Smith) saving Earth from an invasion by alien butterflies that he had been assigned to help investigate, facing down his father, the leader of a white supremacist terror cell, and starting to make real friends for himself. The second season opens with Peacemaker attending an interview with Lord Maxwell, Guy Gardner (aka Green Lantern), and Hawkgirl, and accidentally overhearing how badly they really think of him, which leads to him leaving the interview with his dignity in shambles and seeking comfort with Leota Adebayo, the daughter or Amanda Waller (Suicide Squad).

Season 2 of Peacemaker will carry over storylines from the new Superman (2025) film, which featured an uncredited appearance by Peacemaker in a blink-and-miss-it moment of him on a television screen within the movie. The second season of the series will also put Peacemaker into the thick of the new DC Universe, as well as clarify some details about the cosmic reboot.
The second season of Peacemaker is set to premiere on HBO Max on August 21st, 2025.
