With Season 2 of Netflix’s adaptation of One Piece arriving in March of 2026, casting news about Season 3 has already begun. The public has recently become aware of the selection of performer Cole Escola to play the assassin Bon Clay in this future season of the show. Bon Clay is a contract killer who combines murder with significant theatrical inspirations through their heavy use of swan iconography and ballet fashion. They are also noted in the manga and anime as feeling as though they are both a man and a woman, with that nature hopefully being fulfilled by Cole Escola.
A smaller name in the film and television acting world, with voice credits in a handful of animated shows and a few live action appearances over the years, Escola is a non-binary performer, and is incredibly notable as having recently won a Tony Award for their work on the play Oh Mary!. Opening on Broadway this year, the production is a drag queen retelling of the story of Mary Todd Lincoln. Escola wrote and starred in Oh Mary!, going on to win Best Leading Actor in a Play, the first non-binary actor to do so.

Considering the theatrical elements of Bon Clay’s character, a performer of the stage is a perfect choice to embody the diva-tastic assassin, while also hopefully fulfilling the character’s inclusive elements through that choice in performer. It will likely be a year or two before we see anything of Season 3 of Netflix’s One Piece, but fans should keep an eye open for other announcements coming soon.
