While the notion of film companies rewriting, resubmitting, or throwing out film ideas and projects isn’t an entirely new practice, what is garnering attention is politics getting into the mix. According to a recent X post, Texas representative Congressman Joaquin Castro criticized the film giant Warner Bros. for canceling an upcoming film project, Coyote vs. Acme, in favor of a $30 million tax break. In Castro’s X post, he calls the practice “predatory” and “anti-competitive” and urges the Justice Department to take an in-depth look into Warner Bros.' practice of “strategically” throwing out film projects in return for lucrative tax breaks.

The post Castro made on his social media account is far from the first time he has brought the public's attention to Warner Bros.’ practices. Previously last April, Castro brought Warner Bros merger with Discovery into question, explaining how the merger "affected labor and consumer markets" and requesting the Justice Department to investigate the matter. The matter appears more pressing, considering how the Coyote vs. Acme project was nearly complete when trashed; a similar fate that befell Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Hunt.

Audiences waited on bated breath for the writers’ and actors’ strike to conclude, and news of upcoming film projects being abandoned has created more disappointment from fans, not to mention the lack of response from Warner Bros. about their decision to abandon the film. Their only response thus far has been the company allowing the filmmakers to “shop” Coyote vs. Acme around to other studios.

As screenings are being set up for streaming services such as Prime Video, Apple, and Netflix, viewers might have the chance to see if the film project lives up to Scott Pilgrim co-creator BenDavid Grabinski’s declaration that the project is "the best of its kind since Roger Rabbit."
