May 6th, 2025, brought fans of the Destiny franchise a heap of new information about the next expansion thanks to a reveal livestream hosted by Bungie. This stream also gave players knowledge about wide-reaching game updates to core systems and explained some of the reasoning behind these big changes.
The biggest news involved a focus on the next Saga of Destiny’s story. Called the Fate Saga, it will see players confronting the Nine, immensely powerful dark matter beings who exist in connection with the Sun and the eight planets of our solar system. While Destiny has touched on the Nine before, this new storyline appears to be giving greater personalization to the group while also emphasizing they act independently of each other and their greatest goal is to exist in the physical universe, regardless of the cost or methods to acquire those forms.

The first entry in that saga will be Edge of Fate, a major content drop with Metroidvania elements, which will take Guardians to the astronomical object Kepler in the Oort Cloud of our solar system. It appears the Nine have been at work on Kepler for either some time, or only very recently, abducting and dumping objects and people from across human history onto the world.
The Vex and Fallen are also here as enemy factions, with the Vex represented by the Future Vex looking to study the Nine, and the Fallen represented by a returning group, the House of Exiles, who appeared in the original Destiny but who only appeared in lore for Destiny 2. Once based on the Moon, it seems these Fallen have fallen under the sway of a being they call “The Giver” and have received copious upgrades to their arsenal in the form of Strand weapons and other new gear.

Edge of Fate will release on July 15th, with several other DLCs and game updates announced as part of a robust roadmap that charts the next 12 months of Destiny. Fate, though, will be joined by some major changes to the gameplay of Destiny 2. Armor 3.0, a major shift in how armor is handled by Bungie, sees the stat categories simplified alongside the bonuses offered by achieving certain levels of investment in these stats. Each set of armor will also have notable bonuses, a long-requested community feature to change the casual, seasonal-based set bonuses used to grind out reputation with the seasonal vendor. As a small note on weaponry, in addition to a new system for tiering weapons that is coming with this expansion, a new shooting gallery for weapon and ability testing will be available to all players.
There will also be substantial changes to the way the game presents its core experience, with a new landing page called the Portal being what players first see when they open up Destiny’s in-game navigation menu. The Portal is intended to help better direct players to content they want to play, and drops alongside new modifiers to build how difficult you want your activities to be.
Lastly, Edge of Fate appears to be significantly flattening the current power level of Guardians. After steadily increasing year by year without a reset or major reduction, players will find their power level dropping from the early 2000s down to the low 100s. This reset of power level, alongside the armor changes, Portal, and plenty of other adjustments detailed months ago, are likely geared toward inviting new players into the world of Destiny 2. Hopefully, newcomers come to give the game a shot, older players come back to explore the new changes, and current players enjoy the various innovations and changes. Bungie is working hard at rethinking their game, and we are excited to see what more is to come.
