In a recent livestream hosted by Bungie outlining the future expansions, content and updates to the world of Destiny 2, the next major DLC was mentioned, Edge of Fate. However, the major DLC following that, called Renegades, was also teased, though it is unique in comparison to anything else Bungie has offered in the past.

The short trailer that they aired, which provides little more than a tease at the expansion due for Winter 2025, features notable Star Wars sound effects, Guardians wielding some familiar Star Wars weaponry, and ends with licensing information and the Lucasfilm Games logo beside that of Bungie. During the discussion on the livestream and in the articles released since, Bungie messaging has been clear that this is an expansion inspired by Star Wars, but it is still a Destiny story that will be key to the Fate Saga going forward.

Alongside this are new Dark Side Star Wars-themed cosmetics, currently bundled with some preorder tiers of the next year of game content, but are almost sure to drop separately when this DLC launches. They join a host of other Star Wars cosmetics Bungie released during Episode: Heresy, which now appears to have been more of an appetizer for this much larger collaboration.

The exact nature of Renegades as an experience is a mystery. One would assume that if it is merely inspired by Star Wars, then Bungie would not feel the need to enter an agreement with Lucasfilm for partnership over the expansion. Yet, they have, which would suggest a deeper overlap than past cosmetics drops. There is some precedent for this, thanks to Bungie’s 30th Anniversary content release for Destiny 2 from a few years ago.

As part of that update, which saw cosmetics inspired by modern clothing and fashion styles alongside outfits and weapons referring back to other Bungie properties like Marathon, one particular weapon players could discover was a magnum similar to the one wielded by Master Chief in the original Halo trilogy. This exotic sidearm, called Forerunner in Destiny, was accessible through a quest that brought Guardians into contact with a Halo cryo pod located in Eternity, the realm of the Nine. It just so happens that the Nine are also the focus for this next Saga of storytelling, meaning the paraverse factoring into the lore of this storyline makes complete sense.

While it is extremely unlikely that Darth Sidious or Poe Dameron is going to suddenly appear in Destiny 2 as they recent have in Fortnite, the presence of the paraverse might allow for a specific location of Destiny’s world to be impacted by objects and ideas of the Star Wars galaxy which have seeped through the barrier between realities. Ultimately, we’ll have to wait for more information in four months, as a dedicated reveal is planned for September, but the speculation is sure to remain strong over the coming weeks in the Destiny, Star Wars, and sci-fi fan communities.
