When Rogue One: A Star Wars Story premiered in theaters in 2016, the action-packed tale of rebel spies quickly became a fan favorite.  Director Gareth Edwards, however, recently revealed that a now beloved scene was initially imagined very differently.

The fast-paced precursor to the original Star Wars film tells the story of a ragtag band of rebel spies who defy the odds to steal and deliver the plans of the Death Star to the rebel alliance in an attempt to defeat the evil Galactic Empire. In its harrowing climax, Darth Vader attacks a group of rebels within a tight hallway, only one of them narrowly escaping with his life, and the hard-earned plans.  This scene, now iconic to the Star Wars fandom, was initially imagined very differently.

Edwards explained the initial plan for the scene in an interview with Fandango, saying, “He [Darth Vader] arrives and obliterates the Calamari ship, and then the blockade runner gets out just in time and he pursues the blockade runner. And then Jabez was like, ‘I think we need to get Darth on that ship,’ and I thought, yeah, that’s a brilliant idea and would love to do it, but there’s no way they’re going to let us do it.”

They did let them do it. When Edwards pitched the scene to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy four months before the film’s release date, he had little hope that she would allow for the changes. Reportedly, however, she “loved it”, and the scene was filmed the next week.

Rogue One’s hallway scene has quickly become one of Darth Vader’s most iconic moments; that it almost never happened is sure to be a well-regarded piece of Star Wars lore.
