As recently reported by Deadline and other publications, Disney has paid a considerable sum for the rights to develop a new franchise out of the incredibly successful series of books, Impossible Creatures. Author Katherine Rundell will have a notable presence within this development, helping pen the scripts for the planned films while she also finishes writing the remainder of the series.
Impossible Creatures has significant commercial success attached to it, which is likely why Disney has bet so big on Rundell’s work. Noted for its “cracking dialogue” and having won two notable literature awards in Britain, the series follows a boy on vacation discovering a mystical realm full of fantastical creatures who are unfortunately suffering as a result of a loss of magic, and he teams with a girl local to the mystical world to help save them. The story found in the books was greatly lauded by Bob Iger himself in a statement celebrating the partnership.
Rundell has also issued a statement similarly warmly discussing the future collaboration with Disney, but one has to wonder if that warmth will last and how quickly Disney will push to get Impossible Creatures on the big screen. We have a potential Game of Thrones situation here, where the production of the films might outpace the material it is drawing from, the final volumes unreleased, while the big screen gives fans an unsatisfactory conclusion to the story. Rundall has a head start and considerable time to finish her novels, but so did G.R.R. Martin. We’ll have to wait and see if this investment pans out, as well as further news about how the partnership might extend the reach of the novel series.
