Disney+ Is Not Proceeding With 'Holes' Reboot

In an entertainment market overly saturated with remakes, sequels, and reboots, it’s not a huge surprise that not all of them make it through the creation process. Such is the case with the Disney+ reboot of the beloved film Holes. Based on the critically acclaimed book of the same name by American author Louis Sachar, Holes tells the story of Stanley Yelnats, a middle schooler who is wrongfully convicted of stealing a pair of shoes and is sent to a juvenile work camp where he and the rest of the inmates have to dig one hole every day. The book is considered a classic, and the film was a modest critical and major commercial success, so the idea of it getting a reboot wasn’t totally odd.
The new Holes would have been a TV series with the roles gender reversed, which itself is an odd choice. So far, no reason has been given for the cancellation, but since the original film was a Disney production, it is highly unlikely that another studio will pick it up. It would have been interesting to see what a Holes TV series would have looked like, but honestly, it’s probably for the best. We don’t need another reboot or remake out there. If you want to revisit the story, just rewatch the 2003 movie. Or better yet, just read the book.
