In an unexpected turn of events, Disney recently announced a three-year partnership with Sora, a generative AI app powered by OpenAI’s software. Users will be able to enter prompts with more than 200 characters, props, and environments in various areas and situations. It will be integrated with Disney+ in early 2026, allowing users to view the creations of others. Additionally, the company will invest $1 billion into OpenAI and utilize its products in development projects. The purpose of this investment is to stay on the cutting edge of technology use in the industry while enhancing the consumer experience.
In a press release from the Walt Disney Company, this collaboration was discussed. The company affirmed, “Disney and OpenAI affirm a shared commitment to responsible use of AI that protects the safety of users and the rights of creators.” A major concern when it comes to A.I.-generated content is the rights of artists and creators behind what the model is trained on. Disney was quick to address this, affirming that “the agreement” with OpenAI “does not include any talent likenesses or voices.”

Disney expounded on the point, “Under the agreement, Disney and OpenAI are affirming a shared commitment to the responsible use of AI that protects user safety and the rights of creators. Together, the companies will advance human-centered AI that respects the creative industries and expands what is possible for storytelling.” While the company is not specific about the details, it is aware of the copyright issues with AI content and is reportedly addressing them off the bat. There will be over 200 characters available to use across Disney's IPs, including Stitch, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Iron Man, Deadpool, Luke Skywalker, and the Mandalorian.
Disney CEO Bob Iger discussed the reasons behind this collaboration: “The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence marks an important moment for our industry, and through this collaboration with OpenAI, we will thoughtfully and responsibly extend the reach of our storytelling through generative AI, while respecting and protecting creators and their works.” He continued, praising the alleged power of imagination it puts in the hands of fans, “Bringing together Disney’s iconic stories and characters with OpenAI’s groundbreaking technology puts imagination and creativity directly into the hands of Disney fans in ways we’ve never seen before, giving them richer and more personal ways to connect with the Disney characters and stories they love.”
