Netflix’s history with The Chronicles of Narnia adaptations has been tricky, but Greta Gerwig’s movie seems to be here to stay as development continues. A significant character has potentially been cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, while official confirmation has not been delivered, Emma Mackey is taking on the role of Jadis the White Witch. This character is a primary antagonist in the series.

Mackey has had varied experiences over her career thus far. She is most well-known for her role as Meg Wiley in Netflix’s Sex Education, Jacqueline de Bellefort in the murder mystery sequel Death on the Nile (2022), Physicist Barbie in Gerwig’s Barbie (2023), and Emily Brontë in the biographical drama Emily (2022). While the White Queen is a bit different from her previous roles, the actress can clearly handle a variety of roles and genres and has a lot to bring to the character.

Gerwig is both the writer and director of this project. The creative’s adaptation of Narnia reportedly focuses on the sixth book of the series, The Magician’s Nephew. This book shows the creation of Narnia by Aslan and the White Witch’s origins, as well as Professor Digory Kirke’s connection to the other world when he was a child. The project is in its early casting phase and is expected to begin filming in the summer of 2025. Gerwig’s push for a theatrical release was greenlit by Netflix; the film will have about 1,000 theaters IMAX screenings over two weeks, currently scheduled to start on November 25, 2026.
