Has another soldier been left behind? A DC Studios film based on the “Sgt. Rock” character has been recently shelved. Attached to this project were Luca Guadagnino as the director and Justin Kuritzkes as the writer. Colin Farrell, also known as The Penguin, was in talks to play Sgt. Rock, after the previous choice, a post-Bond Daniel Craig, dropped out. In the end, the project seems to have been the victim of poor scheduling; the film couldn’t make its summer filming date, and thus it was shelved. Though “never say never” is common in the industry, it appears that Rock’s destiny lies elsewhere.
Sgt. Rock made his debut in Our Army at War issue 83, released in June 1959. Created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, Rock was the leader of the Easy Company, and is described by the Wrap as “a crack shot with a strong will and even stronger convictions.” Movie adaptations have been passed around since the 80s, with such names attached as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Joel Silver, Bruce Willis, and Guy Ritchie, among others. He recently appeared in Creature Commandos, voiced by Maury Sterling. For Guadagnino’s part, he still has plenty of projects on his plate, but it looks like this Sergeant has been discharged.
