Miami Vice is coming to the big screen in a new movie by Universal Studios. Joseph Kosinski, whose recent work includes Top Gun: Maverick filmmaker, is set to direct the project. Dan Gilroy, the Nightcrawler filmmaker, is writing the script from a previous draft by Eric Warren Singer. Singer departed the project due to another commitment to the Amazon MGM studios’ upcoming film Best of Enemies with Christian Bale and Bradley Cooper. The original television series debuted in the 1980’s with Don Johnson and Phillip Michael Thomas in pastel suits. The show focused on undercover cops in flashy sports cars who took down drug dealers and cartels against the vibrant Miami backdrop.
The series found new life with a 2006 film starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. The film earned $163.7 million in the global box office but has retreated into nostalgia and pop culture references since then. The new Miami Vice film has been in the pipeline for some time but Kosinski’s other projects meant putting it on the back burner. Those projects include a UFO conspiracy thriller and F1, a Formula One film starring Brad Pritt. As Miami Vice is still being written, it has not been cast yet, and no release date has been announced.
