Despite Tom Cruise’s non-exclusive deal with Warner Bros. Discovery earlier this week to develop and produce theatrical films, news of a third Top Gun at Paramount has now made headlines. He is currently in the middle of filming Paramount’s Mission: Impossible 8, so it may be a while before Top Gun 3 hits its prime time. The newest installment of Mission: Impossible is penciled in for a 2025 release right now. Following MI 8, there’s also an upcoming science fiction film from Universal, directed by Doug Liman, that Cruise reportedly will star in.

Continuing stories from the second Top Gun installment, Top Gun: Maverick, we already know that in addition to Cruise, Miles Teller and Glen Powell will also return for the third film reprising their roles as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, and Jake “Hangman” Seresin, respectfully. The newest continuation to the Top Gun franchise will be directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Cruise, Kosinski, and Jerry Bruckheimer. A first draft for the new script is being penned by Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote Maverick.

Top Gun: Maverick was Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing movie of his whole career, making nearly $1.5 billion worldwide since its May 2022 release. Steven Spielberg remarked to Cruise that he “saved Hollywood’s ass” with the film and he “might have saved theatrical distribution” with the Top Gun sequel.
