HarperCollins Reveals a New, Illustrated Edition of 'The Hobbit'

There is no better time to be a Tolkien fan than right now. 2023 is the 20th Anniversary of The Return of the King, and as such the extended edition will be in theaters for a period of time. New deals have also been signed, promising more movies to explore more of the world of Middle-earth.

HarperCollins is apt to capitalize on this new wave of interest, and is releasing fans’ favorite Tolkien works with all new illustrated editions. Last year was The Silmarillion, and the year before that was The Lord of the Rings. This year, HarperCollins will release an illustrated edition of The Hobbit.

These illustrated editions feature beautiful covers lined in Elven script and come complete with illustrations by the legendary creator himself. Tolkien was not only a talented writer and linguist, but an avid illustrator, often supplying publishing companies with his own illustrations to accompany his works. This version will come with 50 maps and illustrations that Tolkien himself drew.

The Hobbit was the first book that started it all. First published in 1937, it has gone on to sell over 150 million copies, and from there he went on to create an entire world and history. In his letters, Tolkien explains that much of what he did was to create a mythology for England, drawing on Norse and English history and mythology to create his own. Since then, his works have inspired an entire genre of fiction and countless authors and writers for generations.

The Hobbit illustrated edition releases this September 19 and is available for pre-order now.
