Harrison Ford Explains Why 'Star Wars' Would Be OK Without Han

Compared to Harrison Ford’s other famous character, Indiana Jones, who the actor regards as a favorite role, Ford appears to have been apathetic at best towards Han Solo. Ford already had an established career, but Solo propelled him to stardom. His earlier career gave him some leverage in negotiations, compared to both Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill. Harrison Ford still had his reservations about playing the character, saying, “He's got no mama, he's got no papa, he's got no future. He has no story responsibilities at this point.“ He famously tried to get him killed off in Return of the Jedi, and played a part in Solo’s actual death in The Force Awakens, later half-jokingly saying, “I argued for 30 years for this to happen, and finally I wore ‘em down.“ You can see more in the video down below.

In all fairness to Ford, he kind of does have a point. Solo’s main arc in the trilogy is largely centered around his mercenary attitude in A New Hope. It’s done and finished by the end of the film, and his main arcs in the other two films in the trilogy largely revolve around either his romance with Leia, or everyone else’s attempts to rescue him. Furthermore, his death is seen as a highlight of the seventh movie, even as the sequel trilogy remains divisive, so killing him off may have been a boon for the film. Of course, that’s just one way of looking at it.
