James Gunn Insists That 'Superman' Doesn't Need To Be A Big Box Office Hit To Be Successful

Though the old DCEU faltered massively, Gunn is adamant that this reboot is “not the riskiest endeavor in the world.” While the success of Superman, which arrives in theatres on July 11, will determine the fate of the DCU, James Gunn has assured that expectations for its success are reasonable. “Is there something riding on it? Yeah, but it’s not as big as people make it out to be.”
Internet communities exaggerating is nothing new. Gunn acknowledges the overblown things those communities have been saying, making it known that such isn’t how Warner Bros. sees things. He said that such communities “hear these numbers that the movie’s only going to be successful if it makes $700 million or something and it’s just complete and utter nonsense. It doesn’t need to be as big of a situation as people are saying.”
With a reported cost of around $330 million in production and marketing, Superman is poised to make up to $200 million at the box office on its opening weekend. Though most estimates have been closer to $100 million. That would still be seen as a success in the continuing superhero fatigue. Something James Gunn commented on back in 2023.
When Gunn believes superhero fatigue is a thing, he feels “it doesn’t have anything to do with superheroes. It has to do with the kind of stories that get told, and if you lose your eye on the ball, which is character. We love Superman. We love Batman. We love Iron Man. Because they’re these incredible characters that we have in our hearts. And if it becomes just a bunch of nonsense onscreen, it gets really boring.”
