With James Gunn’s Superman release this weekend, the director has turned his focus to other projects. Gunn confirmed that Matt Reeves’ script for The Batman II is complete. All Gunn had to say about it was, “That’s great.” While this is short and to the point, its brevity isn’t a bad sign. It simply means that the DC Studios head has faith in Reeve’s script. With Gunn’s approval, the film is set to begin shooting this year in preparation for an October 1, 2027, release.
Unlike the new Superman movie, The Batman II is not part of the new DC “Gods and Monsters” canon, but will continue the “Batman Epic Crime Saga.” This film will continue in the universe of The Batman and the HBO series The Penguin. Even though the story is a departure from the canon, every successful film is a win for DC. Previously, Gunn came to Matt’s defense when fans were growing impatient. He said, “People should get off Matt's nuts because it's like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. That's just the way it is. He doesn't owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.” While fans wait for the new Batman, they can catch Gunn’s Superman, releasing in theaters on July 11, 2025.
