J.D. Dillard's 'Star Wars' Movie No Longer In The Works

Recent news surrounding Star Wars movies seems bleak, as yet another filmmaker will not see their vision come to fruition. J.D. Dillard revealed that his Star Wars project will not be happening.
While doing an interview for Devotion, Dillard’s newest film, he spoke with The Wrap about future projects, including the Star Wars project he was attached to in 2020. Dillard had this to say about his Star Wars movie:
“Unfortunately, it’s no longer a thing—it was not for lack of trying.”

While this may not shock many people, as Lucasfilm has had a tendency to announce films that never see the light of day, such as Patty Jenkins Rogue Squadron or Rian Johnson's new trilogy, the news is still disappointing. Lucasfilm has not released a Star Wars movie since The Rise of Skyywalker back in 2019, and since then, has had trouble getting their projects off the ground and running.

While taking a Star Wars movie is something of a curse right now, the Dillard news is most upsetting due to the potential of having an African American director in the chair helming a project in the galaxy far, far away. As Rick Famuyiwa is currently working on The Mandalorian, the only other African American director was Victoria Mahoney, who worked on The Rise of Skywalker as a second unit director. Dillard’s project not only sounded interesting, but it also could have been a step in the right direction for diversity behind the camera.

Dillard also elaborated on what exactly his project would have been about. In his interview with The Wrap, Dillard mentions his love for the computer game called “TIE Fighter'' and how he remembers playing the game alongside his father. While he avoided giving away too many details, one could guess the movie would have tried to take something from the “TIE Fighter” game that introduced Dillard to the franchise.
