In a very surprising announcement within the various Star Trek reveals at the Saturday, July 26th panel at San Diego Comic-Con, an upcoming episode of Strange New Worlds will dip into the world of puppetry.

In a special teaser for the upcoming episode, we see a puppet version of Captain Christopher Pike sitting in the command chair. While the clip is extremely brief, the dash of humor at the end both matches the general tone of Strange New Worlds but also touches on the sort of comedy seen in many puppet-focused productions.

In discussions at the panel itself, presenters revealed that Paramount was working with the Jim Henson Creature Shop to bring the puppets to life, and the episode’s director would be Jordan Canning. He previously directed an episode of Season 2, but more importantly for this special episode, also directed seven installments of the Fraggle Rock revival, meaning he had significant experience with directing and filming puppetry.

No further information was provided on the plot or other characters set to appear, but the episode perfectly slots into the heavy genre focus of Strange New Worlds, which has had everything from horror stories to a crossover with an animated show to a musical. This is certainly one of the more unique styles of episode the series has done, though, and if we had to guess, it will involve the show’s characters having their perception altered by a common factor or villain. But we won’t have to wait too long for more answers as Season 4 continues to release its episodes over the coming weeks.
