John Boyega Opens Up: 'Star Wars' Actor Has Come Around to Finn's Treatment in Sequel Series

In an interview with The Times of London, John Boyega opened up about his troubles in a galaxy far, far away while filming the Star Wars sequels. Boyega said the main problem came from putting his character, the reformed Stormtrooper Finn in a starring role in The Force Awakens and then relegating him to background status for the next two films. Back in 2020, Boyega shared his frustrations with Disney, “What I would say to Disney is, ‘Do not bring out a black character, market them to be much more important to the franchise than they are and then have them pushed to the side. It’s not good.”

As the years passed and Boyega was able to enjoy new Star Wars properties, he came around to his role in the franchise. He praised Disney’s treatment of Moses Ingram when the performer was protected from racist feedback. In retrospect, Boyega was glad to have paved the way for other minority actors in the Star Wars universe. The actor reflected, “For me, Star Wars has made the man, in a sense…The experiences, the fun times, good times, ugly times, bad times, it makes you who you are as you navigate through the industry, and that has definitely been interesting.”

Why Is John Boyega "Done" With Star Wars?

As Boyega came to peace with his Star Wars experience, he also found peace with his character. He remarked, “I feel like the arc that JJ [Abrams] tried to tie up, that’s where I feel comfortable with the release of him [Finn]. And since then I’ve been able to enjoy, as a fan, The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi. I’m enjoying the balance of all things.” Boyega recently appeared in the movie Breaking as a Marine veteran, The Woman King as King Ghezo, and plays the starring role in the upcoming film They Cloned Tyrone. His next project Attack of the Block II is still in pre-production.
