It’s no surprise that with the rise of AI, major studios would want to use it to their advantage. Lionsgate announced last September that it had struck a deal with an AI startup called Runway. This will allow the studio to “enhance and supplement” their operations. This is the first major AI deal with a studio. The company is trying to “figure out what sticks” regarding how they can use their new AI tool.
Vice Chairman Michael Burns said the driving force behind this deal would allow filmmakers to make films they never would’ve made before. They might not be able to make something for $100 million, but with AI, they could make it for half the price.

They could also use AI to repackage content they have already made, and adjust the tone, format, and even rating, which would make it available to a wider audience. Burns says they could take a franchise like John Wick or The Hunger Games and “do it anime, or make it PG-13. Three hours later, I’ll have the movie”. He did make it clear that he would still have to pay the actors and all others who participated in the making of the movies.
He gave another example that when they’re trying to decide if they want to greenlight a movie or not, to consider this scenario, “There’s a 10-second shot- 10,000 soldiers on a hillside with a bunch of horses in a snowstorm”. With the help of AI, they could avoid a costly film shoot that would take multiple days. Runway’s AI technology could make it for about $10,000.
Runway is based in New York City and includes investors such as Google, Nvidia, and Salesforce Ventures.
