Nintendo Direct had some interesting features and exciting news this year. The next installment of Super Mario Bros. was announced. Titled Wonder, the game will add a ton of new features and even makes a character playable that isn’t usually. Check out the gameplay trailer below!

The playable characters in the game include Mario, Luigi, several color variants of Yoshi, Yellow Toad, Princess Peach, and Princess Daisy. Daisy is present in the Super Mario Bros. installments Land, Maker, and Run, however, you can only play as her in Land and wear her as a costume choice in Maker. Making her a playable character off-the-bat in Wonder is a win for Daisy fans.

There are some interesting new enemies as well.  Spherical Hippos disrupt the character’s path and bounce them around. A new Sledge Bro-esque character can manipulate the pipes. There are sinister-looking clouds and a cloud bison creature whose features aren’t fully explored. This only scratches the surface of the enemies in this game!

A nifty new game mechanic centered around the Wonder Flowers was added. When collected, they shake things up. The Wonder Flower can change the game mechanics of a level and transform the player similar to other power-up effects. Their full extent of impact will become more clear as the release date approaches. The flowers really live up to their name! Another interesting game mechanic comes with the elephant-esque fruit: your playable character will turn into an anthropomorphic elephant!

The game will be released for the Nintendo Switch on October 20, 2023, barring any delays. It runs in a single system with local multiplayer capabilities for one to four players. In the digital download format, the file size will be 4.5 gigabytes.
