Good news has come for fans of classic horror creatures. An anime film adaptation of both Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Marvel Comics’ take on the story will be released for streaming with a 4k restoration for the first time!
Kyōfu Densetsu: Kaiki! Frankenstein, or Frankenstein: Legend of Terror, originally premiered in 1981 in Japan and was released in the United States in 1984 with an English dub. It has been incredibly hard to find since. Now, California-based distribution company Deaf Crocodile licensed the title, which will be available through a subscription on the company's website. The film will be in Japanese with English subtitles and have a 98-minute runtime.

Frankenstein: Legend of Terror is an animated retelling of the classic story based on the titular character. Victor Frankenstein, with the help of his assistant Zuckel, succeeds in creating life; unfortunately, this creation leads to a violent confrontation in which the monster falls off a cliff to his presumed demise. People start dying inadvertently during interactions with the monster, leading to increased attention from the nearby village. Emily and her grandfather give him the name Franken and recognize him as neither inherently good nor bad, though eventually fear and distrust erode their relationship and the monster meets a tragic fate. Toei Animation originally produced the film. There is no official location to view it beyond the Deaf Crocodile subscription.
