Writer and director Matt Reeves just confirmed that a key member of The Batman creative team will not return for its sequel. Filming on The Batman Part II will kick off in January, but cinematographer Greig Fraser will not return for it. Reeves confirmed on his official X account that Erik Messerschmidt, who served as cinematographer for The Killer and Mindhunter, is the new cinematographer for The Batman Part II. Messerschmidt won an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for Mank in 2023, and he’s also worked on Fargo, Ferrari, and the upcoming Ridley Scott film, The Dog Stars.

Greig Fraser is well-known for his collaborations with Gareth Edwards on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and The Creator. Fraser also worked on Dune and Dune: Part Two, although he won’t return for Dune: Part Three. On television, the only series Fraser has lent his cinematography talents to is The Mandalorian. Fraser worked on The Mandalorian Chapter 1, Chapter 3: The Sin, and Chapter 7: The Reckoning with Baz Idoine, who served as director of photography with Fraser on Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. In addition, Fraser is also credited as a co-producer on Season 1 of The Mandalorian. He is known as an expert in Stagecraft technology, also known as ‘The Volume’, which played a crucial role in the making of The Batman and The Mandalorian. Fraser’s use of lighting has always received praise, and he’s known for creating powerful images and iconic shots. The Batman Part II stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne and The Caped Crusader. The film is currently slated for release on October 1, 2027.
