Miyamoto Discusses Why Nintendo Are Making So Many Remakes Of Classics

Why make something new when you can just remake something old? That seems to be the way of entertainment these days, remaking, rebooting, and retelling. Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary Nintendo developer and creator of Mario, chimed in on the discussion recently after the reveal that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has a remake coming this year, and Starfox recently released as a remake. At the heart of his logic, he claims that it increases the longevity of the series and allows them to make new entries in the franchises as well.
Miyamoto sat down with Famitsu, a Japanese gaming magazine, to discuss Nintendo’s reputation as a remake machine. It’s not like it’s a secret that Nintendo remakes or re-releases older games. How many of the Pokémon games have been re-released on modern consoles? Miyamoto argued it grants younger players the chance to play something that they weren’t around for or didn’t have the opportunity to. He told Famitsu (translated), “Some people might say there are a lot of remakes, but after five years, a lot of people have outgrown games and stop playing them. Young people today don’t have the opportunity to play games from 10 years ago, so remaking them to be more playable and releasing them again is a good way to meet the demand.”

He further commented that if more people, and by way of his comments, this can be taken to mean younger people, know about and get to play the older games, it opens the door to continuing the series with new installments. “Further developments,” he calls them, and mentioned they have been actively engaged with that lately. The Switch 2 is just over a year old, and there is yet to be a new 3D Mario game. There are also rumors of a new Zelda game in the works, and with the recent success and release of Starfox, many are suspicious that, with Miyamoto’s comments, a new entry in the Starfox series could also be on the way.
