Writer, director, and filmmaker Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker is finally coming to theaters with brand-new dates.  After a long search for a distributor to pick the film up, Altered Innocence has stepped up to the plate.  The film will officially hit theaters on April 5, 2024, starting in New York City, New York.  Following the premiere, the DC parody film will move to select theaters for specified periods of time in over 24 cities, both in the U.S. and Canada.  A handful of the dates have a Q&A with the cast and crew attached to the event.  More information can be found on the film’s website, Altered Innocence.  The final date is currently set for May 8, 2024, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  Not only do we have theatrical release information, but a trailer was released as well!

This colorful trailer gets right to business, introducing the focus of the film, a “closeted trans girl” who “moves to Gotham City to make it big as a comedian.”  While working at a sketch show “in a world where comedy has been outlawed,” the main character befriends others pushed to the fringe of society.  In the end, “Joker the Harlequin” is born again as a confident (and psychotic) joker on a collision course with the city's fascist caped crusader.”  The People’s Joker is an artistic autobiography reimagined with the idea of the classic Batman characters, telling a queer coming-of-age story with a transgender woman front and center.

The People’s Joker has had a bit of a tricky history up to now when it comes to screenings.  This film was first screened at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.  Following the premiere, other screenings were canceled due to a cited issue with rights and fair use discrepancy.  In 2023, the film was cleared for a U.S. screening for the first time.  It took a bit of time, but patience has paid off, as the film is now hitting theaters next month; check out the trailer below!
