“Oh no, there goes Tokyo… twice!” Toho has announced that it has begun development for two sequels in the Godzilla franchise. First announced was a sequel to Godzilla: Minus One, which premiered in 2023; the sequel was announced in a report from Bloomberg. Meanwhile, Toho's international head Koji Ueda has stated that they are planning on making a sequel to Shin Godzilla, released back in 2016 and directed by Hideaki Anno. These projects are separate from the Monsterverse, co-produced with Legendary Pictures, with Toho still involved in the production of projects like Godzilla x Kong: Supernova and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2.
This represents a break from tradition, as many previous Godzilla films all either took place in the same continuity, as in the Shōwa and Heisei cycles, or were largely separate, ignoring all but the first movie and maybe a previous one, as in the Millennium era. Now, Toho is supporting multiple continuities at the same time, with multiple films in development and a new direction for the King of the Monsters. Is this the start of a brand new era for Japan’s most famous monster? Is this just another direction for a decades-long franchise? Only time will tell.
