Din Djarin was defined by his Mandalorian identity for most of his adult life. When the series began, he was shown as a devout Mandalorian warrior and a hardened bounty hunter. Everything changed when Djarin met a baby of the Yoda species. After struggling to define their relationship, he adopted him at the end of The Mandalorian Season 3. It came after 3 seasons of the series, plus The Book of Boba Fett featured events that proved beyond a reasonable doubt that Din and Grogu couldn’t live without each other. The solution was for them to be a family, but Grogu not only chose to be with his father, he also chose to be a Mandalorian. This has changed Din Djarin’s priorities, and in an interview with Empire, Jon Favreau revealed just how much has changed for Mando in the upcoming ‘Mandalorian and Grogu’ movie. Favreau says that Djarin wants to be sure he aligns himself with the ‘good guys,’ now that he is responsible for looking after himself and Grogu.

As seen at the end of Season 3, Djarin is ready to help the New Republic capture Imperial remnants, and Favreau believes he will no longer “want to go out there and just be a hired gun. I want to work for the good guys.’” Working for good guys will bring him together with former Rebel heroes, including Garazeb Orrelios and Colonel Ward, a new character played by the legendary Sigourney Weaver. Weaver’s character served as a pilot during the Rebellion, and as the series revealed, Grogu and Din both witnessed the Empire’s atrocities as children. Djarin will now hope to protect Grogu from the same Imperial terror, but as Grogu grows, so do his powers. As much as Djarin wants to protect Grogu, there will be times when he’ll need to be protected as well.

This is part of the evolution of their relationship, which took a backseat to the quest to reclaim Mandalore in Season 3. Still, the good news, according to Favreau, is, “That central relationship, as they go off and face adventure together, that’s the underpinning of the film.” More than anything, fans can be sure that both characters will grow and evolve, because that’s what Star Wars has always been about. Favreau adds, “It’s about apprenticeship, it’s about one generation teaching the next. There’s more growth that happens over the course of the film.” The Mandalorian and Grogu premieres May 22, 2026.
