The official trailer for The Super Mario Bros Movie has been released today, premiering on a Nintendo Direct presentation. Shigeru Miyamoto didn’t get to say much up front but did comment that the film was almost finished. Chris Meledandri, Illumination’s founder, heaped praise upon Anya Taylor-Joy, who voices Princess Peach in the movie.

Like the teaser’s Direct featuring Chris Pratt and Jack Black, who voiced Mario and Bowser in the film, this Direct featured Joy and Seth Rogen, the voice of Donkey Kong, who, as a lifelong Nintendo fan, had made a Mario film a career goal. The trailer begins with Mario heading into combat with Donkey Kong on Donkey Kong Island, and Mario gets beaten hard. Luigi is in Bowser’s clutches, allowing us to hear Charlie Day as Luigi for the first time. Bowser uses Luigi to lure Mario as his castle descends into the Mushroom Kingdom. Princess Peach and Toad are ready to fight back, even as the other Toads in the kingdom aren’t sure how. But hey, there’s traditional Mario platforming in the quest, which looks great. In addition, there are even more beloved game elements adapted. It might make your kart—sorry, heart race in excitement. Still undecided on Pratt’s performance, however, despite there being more to judge from.

Miyamoto finished the presentation by giving a closer look at Donkey Kong’s design in the movie, the first changes since the character was translated to 3D over 25 years ago, bringing back some of the classic features. This trailer was an impressive showing for the rest of the cast and certainly built hype for the film. The Super Mario Bros. Movie also features Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Foreman Spike, with the long-time voice of Mario Charles Martinet making several cameos. The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 7, 2023, after many countries but before Japan. This trailer will likely be attached to Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, which releases on December 21.
