Yesterday, Disney released the first trailer for James Cameron’s third Avatar installment, Fire and Ash.
While this is the first trailer we can see for the film, it gives glimpses as to what the story is going to be this time around.
Quarritch is back in his Avatar body, and it looks like he’s seeking allies with a clan of Pandorans, the titular Ash clan, known to themselves as the Mangkwan. Previous articles have discussed that this clan is a unique clan from the ones encountered in the franchise so far. They lost their connection to Eywa as a result of a volcanic eruption. Their leader, Varang, is shown lighting her hands on fire in a sort of trance-like, spiritual manner. This clan is physically different from others we’ve seen so far as well. Their skin is more grayed out, and they paint themselves in bright red paint.
In the trailer, as I said, Quarritch and the remnants of the RDA are seen approaching the Mangkwan, likely to achieve some mutual end. What exactly that end is remains uncertain, though there is a battle between Sully’s people and the Mangkwan, and the way it’s cut suggests the tension there is between Neytiri and Varang, suggesting that perhaps the rivalry between Sully and Quarritch remains their focus. Sully, perhaps, is captured at some point, as it looks like he’s been escorted to trial or execution surrounded by breather-clad humans. Family trauma and tension also seem to be the focus this time around, as there are tense, emotional interactions shown between Sully and his family members.

We also see more of the nomadic air Na’vi, who, in previous screenshots, can be seen wearing clothes from the other Avatar franchise that Cameron surely borrowed inspiration from. They roam the skies of Pandora on these massive floating platforms pulled by creatures that float and swim through the sky like air whales. Speaking of which, the themes of the previous movie return, not to be abandoned (suggesting that Cameron is building toward some big, Endgame kind of showdown between Pandora and humans), as there are several shots of the sea creatures and sea-borne human craft.
The movie releases this December 19.
