In a noticeable change from earlier plans, Marvel abruptly moved the launch of the animated anthropology miniseries Eyes of Wakanda to August 1st. This news was shortly followed by a new trailer for the show, which gave us a closer look at the four different stories viewers are set to experience.

Created by Todd Harris and produced by Ryan Coogler, Eyes of Wakanda will explore the ancient past of Wakanda, but will not be tied down to the nation’s borders. Instead, Eyes of Wakanda looks to embrace the historic reality (though with some exaggeration) of an interconnected ancient and pre-modern world, where Africa was part of trade routes and travel that linked distant parts of the world together. The new trailer shows Wakandans venturing across different terrains, and encountering an array of different people and threats. Eyes also looks to expand the history of the MCU’s Prime Timeline, something done in smaller ways through Marvel’s other notable animated project, What If…?.

In speaking with Empire Magazine, Harris specifically notes a story that will explore “raiders who robbed their way through the Mediterranean” who were inspired by real-world Bronze Age tribes. He is almost certainly referring to the Sea Peoples, a mysterious group of loosely aligned tribes who attacked nations like Egypt and were one of many factors in the Bronze Age Collapse. Despite such a notable pull from real world history, Harris also promises that we will see “familiarity” in the show, but whether that is locations or characters, he doesn’t clarify. Fans won’t have to wait much longer to find out though!
