It seems as if everything is being turned into a huge series in an attempt to follow the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The IT movie franchise is getting a prequel series to be released on HBO Max. For the uninitiated, the IT series is based on the novel of the same name written by horror literacy legend Stephen King. Both films in the series, IT and the sequel IT Chapter 2, are centered around Pennywise, a clown who terrorizes children.

Welcome to Derry (working title) will be developed for television by Andy and Barbara Muschietti, who were involved with the two movies. Jason Fuchs (of Wonder Woman fame), who has also worked on IT Chapter 2, will be one of the showrunners. He described his excitement about the upcoming series:

“To be able to return to the world of my all-time favorite horror novel and help build upon the singularly brilliant cinematic universe created by Andy and Barbara is more than the opportunity of a lifetime, it’s a dream come true — or, maybe more appropriately, a nightmare.”

The Muschietti siblings reflected on their love for the series:

“As teenagers, we took turns reading chapters of Stephen King’s It until the thick paperback fell to pieces. It’ is an epic story that contains multitudes, far beyond what we could explore in our ‘It’ movies. We can’t wait to share the depths of Steve’s novel, in all its heart, humor, humanity, and horror.”

Even author Stephen King weighed in with some positive remarks:

“I’m excited that the story of Derry, Maine’s most haunted city, is continuing, and I’m glad Andy Muschietti is going to be overseeing the frightening festivities, along with a brain trust including his talented sister, Barbara. Red balloons all around!”

Welcome to Derry is scheduled to be released later this year.
